Some Mad Monday... TOUR!hi all. it's monday...night. sorry for the delay, we had some major technical difficulties...
but this week, we're bringing you... a tour!
yep. that's right, i'm taking "some mad hope" on a
headlining, full scale, full band hootenanny across
these great united states (and toronto) this fall, and
i wanted you to be the first to get the dates.
we've got some amazing acts opening the tour:
cary brothers and kate voegle are on the first half,
melee and ingrid michaelson are on the second.
so, it's gonna be a great night of music, for sure...
not to mention the pyrotechnics and the cirque du soleil dancers!
the dates are below.
if you don't see your town, fear not...
this is only the first of many runs i'll do supporting "some mad hope"
so hang tight, i'm sure we'll get to your neck of the woods soon enough.
cool.
hope you are all enjoying the summer.

monday, mondayhey all,
a little background on me, matt.
the only reason i play acoustic guitar is because of the indigo girls.
i always wanted to be in a band, until the day i heard their first record.
then i just wanted to BE them. i think i've seen them live 40 times.
and they never disappoint.
they didn't need a band to be powerful, they wrote amazing songs,
their harmonies were shiver inducing, they were friends with R.E.M...
they were perfect.
and for me, growing up... they were as alternative, musically, as
you could get. just 2 acoustic guitars and 2 voices.
this week, i wanted to take a break from the pre-release roll out of
"some mad hope," to share with all of you THE coolest moment in
my musical life so far.
over memorial day weekend, i was involved in an amazing
3 day retreat in new orleans with a handful of incredible artists,
including emily and amy (indigo girls). it was a workshop on
activism and the arts and it culminated in a concert to benefit
Sweet Home New Orleans. in the taxi on the way to the show,
i finally spilled the beans to them both about how influential
they had been to me and they asked if i wanted to "sing michael's
(stipe... of REM) part on 'kid fears?'"...
i know you can't tell from the video, but i was having an out of body
experience. seriously. to be able to harmonize with my heroes on a song
i sang at every open mic i ever played is surreal. i was stunned.
and euphoric. i'm actually still getting over the shock.
not the best recording/sound quality, but you get the picture.
i come in on the last chorus.enjoy!

until next week,
matt

ok.
now on to the good stuff...
first off, the album version of car crash is now up
and streaming for your listening enjoyment.
as you know, i just finished a week of radio promo that ended with
a concert, on the air, at WXPN in philadelphia.
the band flew in and rehearsed without me for 2 days....
and i showed up the night before for a very intense 5 hour
cram-a-thon to break in a new drummer, rob avisharian.
needless to say, the band (aaron tap, john thomasson and rob)
rose to the challenge and they killed! sounded amazing!
mark weinberg, my co-writer and the co-producer of 'some mad hope', was also
on hand to play some guitar with us on 'gone' and 'to the beat of our noisy hearts.'
-click here- to read my journal entry and to stream the entire 45 minute show in all its glory.
well that's it for me,
hope that tides you over.
until next week,

to the beat of our noisy heartshappy monday!
i'm writing you all from the beginning of yet another
week of promotion for the new record, 'some mad hope.'
today i'm in seattle. tomorrow it's portland, then denver,
then boston, then philly... ending in los angeles on tuesday.
this round is mostly radio station visits.
you know... meeting DJs, playing on the air, all the while
convincing the stations that 'car crash' is the best song they've
ever heard, EVER. and that they really haven't lived until they've
played it on their station a million times. and made me hugely successful.
it's like part self promotion/part jedi mind trick.
anyway... for this next installment of the 'some mad hope' preview,
i wanted to give you all another full song from the record.
this time it's a track called, "to the beat of our noisy hearts."
the song is track 7. almost the exact middle of the record.
here's a little back story:
- this was one of the last songs written.
- the title was written first, before anything else... which i NEVER do.
- i pretty much finished it right before we went in to record it.
- this song was my attempt at ripping off the violent femmes.
i have always loved the way the femmes had songs that were acoustic
guitar driven, but were still punky and cool. like 'blister in the sun.'
of course, this song ended up sounding NOTHING like the violent femmes...
but it's pretty cool none the less.
- the lyrics in the 2nd verse are my favorite lyrics on the whole record. they are:
"she was her mother's secret. she was daddy's girl
and she brought weekend boys home in her curls.
she said my love is a fever. come on, touch my skin
they all think i'm easy. well, i'm easy... cause i let them win"
and so, without further adieu....
i give you "to the beat of our noisy hearts"
enjoy!
